I bet the first thing you thought after reading this post title was Nirvana or Kurt Cobain alone. It's inevitable to don't have that first thought specially when basically the creator of the "grunge movement" was him or at least he made it famous along with his band.
After exhausting days and countless hours of research (late night on a tuesday, 15 min. spent on google) I've come to the conclusion about what grunge means:
Grunge was a movement that went against extreme capitalism, one of the reasons why most of their clothes were bought at thrifts shops, low perspective in life (you basically hate everything), you can't be as anyone else is "don't follow the crowd", sarcasm to it's fullest, you listen to bands no one knows and when they become famous you ignore them, don't shower or look like you didn't for 3 months in a row… Does it ring a bell? *cough* hipsters *cough*.
If you really want to know more about it, google it. Friendly reminder this is a blog not wikipedia, therefore, if some fact about grunge is missing, well…
Grunge did exist before Nirvana came into the limelight, but Nirvana being a small band from Seattle and suddenly hitting the top of the charts with the Nevermind album it was to expect that Kurt Cobain (Nirvana's lead singer/frontman) would be a huge influence, being the music icon he is for his lyrics and wild spirit, he portrayed perfectly what grunge meant. As an analogy, Kurt is to Grunge what Bob Marley is to Rasta.
(which made him more famous) and same unwashed, tangled, long blond hair of his. He had it short too, but basically dirty hair.

In case you wonder about how their daughter looks like now-a-days, here's a set of pictures from the shoot she had with non other but HEDI SLIMANE (Saint Laurent's creative director).
Good genes, huh?
Kate Moss and Johnny Depp.
Just by the sound of it, they sound so extremely cool together it's fascinating. I would have payed to spend an afternoon with these two.
Kate Moss in the 90s was the 'heroin chic', the 'IT model'. Remember the term supermodel was created in the 90s and she's one of them, she's one of the icons of the 90s era.
Johnny Depp was at his top of his career after Edward ScissorHands the movie (which i love) that made him who he is now-a-days. Guess who is the director of this movie, yes, TIM BURTON. NO SURPRISE. After this movie he began his famous relationship with Winona Ryder, you know the one where he got engaged and then got a tattoo and then had to "erase" it after their break-up.
He met Kate later on. Famous incident about Kate and Johnny together was their feisty fight that got them to tore a motel's room.
In case of their style, they seemed very hardcore fans of Docs and leather. Same unwashed, long and tangled hair. Those round 90s sunglasses that I love and barely-there make up for Kate.

Marc Jacobs at the time worked for Perry Ellis, he launched his infamous collection dedicated to grunge. In the collection the models where sporting docs, chuck taylor's, chokers, beanies, baby doll dresses, round sunglasses and very loose + layered pieces of clothing. This collection got Marc Jacobs lose his job at Perry Ellis but made him win the Designer of The Year Award and fame. He was on everybody's mouth after this collection, sadly they never reproduced it. He even sent some pieces to Kurt and Courtney, but with what I've read, Courtney said she and Kurt burned it out because they hated "shit like that". (Mom I'm quoting I swear).
In one of Vogue's documentaries, I saw Anna Wintour saying "Grunge" was the worst fashion phase, she hates it with all her guts.
Now-a-days, we can perceive grunge as a trend but I will define this grunge as a minimal grunge. Why the minimal adjective? because people actually look like they showered and combed their hair but with their flannels around their waist. I'm a sucker for this trend/style, it's very rebellious in a way and definitely more put together than the original one. And also because I love Doctor Marteens.
Some people would say that it has nothing to do with grunge, but it actually does it's inspired from it and if you don't feel the 90s vibes on it... You just don't get it.
Saint Laurent brought grunge back with Hedi Slimane in their last campaigns and shows.
'Night Time, My Time' Sky Ferreira's album has a 90s sound to it, I would say grunge but I'm no music expert. Either way, we all know her style is very grunge/moody/punk/metal/rock sided. So she's on the list.

Designers are pretty obsessed with her style lately, she even was hired as a model in one of Marc Jacob's shows and also had a shoot by Hedi Slimane.

And now let's continue with random celebrity street style.
We have arrived to the end.
